A
fourth class municipality, Ballesteros came about as a town when some barangays
of Aparri and Abulug were merged. Famous for its local products patupat and
royal bibingka, Ballesteros has much potential such as proliferating rural
banks, 2 private tertiary schools, 3 private hospitals, and a district
hospital. Inhabitants are Ilocanos, originally from Ilocos, and Ibanags from
Abulug and Aparri. The town has a population of 32,292 who are primarily
engaged in farming and fishing as the main source of income in the
municipality. The town has a total land area of 12,550 hectares, and most
farmlands are irrigated.
