Sanchez Mira was then the hunting
ground called Malaqui, meaning distortion or Malolokit of Kalinga. They were
the nomadic tribe from the nearby province
of Apayao . It became
barrio Malolokit meaning Nagsisinaan.The official founding of the town was
August 10, 1894. Due to its limited crop suitability, it is best suited for
pasture and forest purposes.
Having a population of 23,781,
Sanchez Mira is a fourth class municipality with a total estimated annual
income of 53.821 million. It is composed of 18 barangays with a total land area
of 19,880 hectares. The soil types of sand dunes, buguey loamy sand, toran
silty clay, dog deep, alaminos clay loam and mountain soil make the town ideal
for forest products like coconut, palm trees and ferns localily known as
“pako”. Through the strong extension programs of the satellite campus of Cagayan State University
in the municipality, it has cottage industries for diversified crops like
coconut byproducts and orchards. The town has 2 major banks, 3 rural banks,
cooperatives and beach resorts that keep the town one of the best performing
towns in the province.
