Lasam
was once a part of Gattaran, but as the population increased, the western part
of the town asked to be created a separate municipality. On January 1951, Lasam
became a separate town and became the fastest growing agricultural municipality
in the province, with crop yields increasing since being recognized a
municipality. Classified a third class municipality, its population is 38,972,
with 30 barangays in a land area of 23,400 hectares. As an agricultural town,
Lasam is also known for its famous patupat, a source of good livelihood for
many families. The town has an estimated annual income of 69.323 million. The Cagayan State University
has a satellite campus located in San Pedro, Lasam making tertiary education
available to the residents.
